“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:105
Let’s be honest. The Bible can feel like a big book for little hearts.
You want your kids to grow up loving God’s Word, you don’t want them to see it as a dusty rulebook that only gets opened on Sundays. But how do you get a 7-year-old excited about scripture when they’re already glued to cartoons, snacks, and Minecraft?
Here’s the good news: the Bible isn’t just for adults, it’s the living word of God that can transform even the smallest hearts. And as parents, we get the honor of planting those seeds of faith and watching God grow them into a beautiful harvest.
At Fidelis Academy, we believe teaching kids to love the Bible doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. With a little creativity, a lot of grace, and a big dose of God’s love, you can make scripture come alive in your home.
Here’s how.
Make It Fun and Relatable – Use Story Bibles and Dramatize Stories
Let’s face it: Leviticus isn’t exactly the first place to start with your 5-year-old. And that’s okay.
Start with age-appropriate Bible stories. Let your child hear about Noah’s ark, David’s courage, and Jesus calming the storm in a way that sparks their imagination. Then, get creative:
- Act out stories with stuffed animals or action figures.
- Let them draw their favorite Bible scene.
- Use silly voices for different characters during bedtime reading.
Faith should feel alive, not stiff. Laughter and fun open the door for deep conversations later.
Create Memory Verse Challenges – With Small Rewards
Kids love a good challenge (especially if stickers or prizes are involved).
Start with short, powerful verses like Psalm 56:3—“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” Write it on a notecard, put it on the fridge, or make it the lock screen on your phone.
- Make it a game:
- Who can say it the fastest?
- Can we sing it as a song?
- What hand motions can we make for each word?
Celebrate every verse they memorize. You’re not just filling their heads with the word of God, you’re planting seeds in their hearts.
Show Them How You Read Scripture – Kids Learn by Watching
Here’s a little parenting secret: your kids are already watching you. They see how you talk to God, how you prioritize (or don’t prioritize) His Word, and how you live out your faith.
No pressure, but it’s also a beautiful opportunity!
Let your children “catch” you reading your Bible in the morning. Talk out loud about what God is teaching you. Share how scripture helps you when you’re frustrated, scared, or thankful.
This isn’t about putting on a show. It’s about being real. When your kids see you leaning into God’s Word, they’ll learn it’s something worth their time too.
Connect Bible Truths to Daily Life – Eg., Kindness on the Playground
The Bible isn’t meant to stay on the bookshelf. It’s meant to shape everyday life.
Help your kids see how God’s Word applies in real time:
- “Remember how we read about loving our neighbor? That’s why we’re bringing cookies to the new family down the street.”
- “When we forgive your brother for taking your toy, we’re living out what Jesus taught us.”
- “You were so brave today! Just like David with Goliath.”
The more they see scripture lived out, the more they’ll understand it’s not just ancient stories, it’s the guidebook for their own adventures.
You’re Doing Kingdom Work
Teaching your kids to love God’s Word isn’t about being the perfect “Bible study family.” It’s about planting little seeds day after day, conversation after conversation and trusting God for the harvest.
You’re not alone in this. At Fidelis Academy, we see you. We see the time you spend reading one more story at bedtime, the verses taped to your bathroom mirror, the prayers whispered over your sleeping child.
We’re cheering you on. You’re doing holy, eternal work and heaven celebrates every seed you sow.
