“But Daniel resolved not to defile himself…” – Daniel 1:8

How do we raise children to stand for Christ in a culture pulling them in every direction?

This is the question many parents are asking today. We want our kids to grow up confident in who God made them to be, unafraid to live out their faith; even when it’s not popular. But let’s be honest: parenting in today’s world can feel overwhelming.

At Fidelis Academy, we believe parents are not alone in this journey. More importantly, God is not surprised by the world we’re raising our children in. He has equipped you to guide your family with courage and faith.

So how do we raise “Daniels” who stand strong for Christ in a culture that often opposes Biblical values? Let’s explore practical, hope-filled ways to help your child grow in faith and confidence.

Resolve Early – Teaching Kids to Make Up Their Minds About God

“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” – Proverbs 22:6

The world isn’t waiting until your child is grown to start influencing them, and we can’t wait either. Daniel didn’t accidentally stand up for his faith. He had resolved, meaning he made up his mind long before he was ever faced with pressure from the culture around him.

Parents can help their children develop a strong foundation of Biblical truth early by:

  • Praying together each morning before school or having a special time carved out for prayer as a family.
  • Reading a Bible story at bedtime
  • Pointing out God’s presence in everyday life

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about planting small seeds of faith that will grow into deep roots, strong enough to hold when challenges come. Be consistent! Teach them that this is important for you and for them.

Know Their Identity – God’s Children, Not the World’s Labels

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession…” – 1 Peter 2:9

Every day, children are bombarded with messages about identity. From social media to peer pressure, they’re asked: Who are you?

If we don’t help them answer that question Biblically, the world will answer it for them.

At Fidelis Academy, we teach students to see themselves as God’s masterpiece, they are fearfully and wonderfully made. Parents can reinforce this at home by:

  • Speaking affirmations of truth over their children by introducing them to God’s promises and what God has already spoken about concerning their identity in Him.
  • Celebrating their God-given gifts and uniqueness
  • Reminding them that their value is in Christ, not in social media likes or achievements

When children know “whose” they are, they’re not easily swayed by who the world says they should be.

Stand in Community – Faith-Filled Friends for the Journey

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds…” – Hebrews 10:24-25

Even Daniel didn’t stand in Babylon alone. He had Shadrach (Hananiah), Meshach (Mishael), and Abednego (Azariah) walking alongside him. Together they prayed, encouraged one another, and stayed true to God.

Our children also need faith-filled friendships. Parents can encourage this by:

  • Connecting with other Christian families
  • Engaging in church or youth groups
  • Choosing environments that support Biblical values

And let’s not forget, parents need community too. Pray and ask God to surround you with others who will pray for you and encourage you on this journey.

Model Courage as Parents – Boldly Living Out Your Faith

“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 11:1

Children learn most by watching. They see how we respond to challenges, how we speak about our faith, and how we treat others; even those we disagree with.

Modeling courage doesn’t require perfection. It requires authenticity. Try:

  • Praying aloud with your children, and when it’s age appropriate, share both your successes and the times you’ve struggled. Let them see a faith that’s real and growing.
  • Sharing stories of times you had to stand for your faith
  • Explaining why your family chooses to live differently

When they see you walking with Jesus daily, they’ll learn that faith isn’t just something we talk about, it’s how we live.

You’re Not Alone in This Journey

Parenting in today’s world isn’t easy, but remember this: God chose you to raise your child, and He doesn’t make mistakes.

At Fidelis Academy, we’re committed to partnering with families to nurture children who are spiritually strong and academically excellent. Together, we can raise a generation of “Daniels” who shine as lights in the world.

Family Discussion Questions

Here are some great questions to discuss as a family this week:

  1. What do you think made Daniel so brave when he was your age? (Daniel 1:8)
  2. Are there situations today where it’s hard to stand up for what’s right? How can we support each other?
  3. What does it mean to you to be “set apart” for God? (1 Peter 2:9)
  4. Can you think of a friend who helps you do the right thing? How can we thank God for them?
  5. How can our family show courage together this week?
