“But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15
Every family is headed somewhere. Are you headed there on purpose or by accident?
It’s an uncomfortable question, I know. But the truth is, our families don’t drift into godliness. In a world full of distractions, competing priorities, and TikTok trends, it’s easy to spend years reacting to life instead of intentionally building one that reflects God’s purposes.
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to be perfect or have it all figured out to lead your family with purpose. You just need a clear vision, a little faith, and a willingness to start small.
At Fidelis Academy, we believe that parents are the primary disciplers of their children, and we’re here to champion you as you set a Christ-centered course for your home. Let’s explore how creating a family mission statement can change everything.
Discover Your Family Values – What Matters Most to You as Christ-Followers?
Before you start crafting poetic mission statements, hit pause and ask: What matters most to us as a family?
This isn’t about Pinterest-perfect wall art. This is about digging deep and identifying the values you want your family to embody.
Here are a few prompts to get started:
- When people describe our family, what do we want them to say?
- What do we hope our children remember about our home when they’re grown?
- What matters more than success, sports trophies, or straight A’s?
Maybe your list includes faith, kindness, generosity, integrity, or perseverance. Whatever it is, write it down. These are the building blocks of your family culture.
Write a Simple Mission Statement – One Sentence That Reflects Your Vision
Now take those values and craft a single, powerful sentence.
Here’s the beauty of a family mission statement: it’s short enough to remember but strong enough to guide you through hard decisions.
Examples:
- “In the Smith family, we honor God by loving others, living with integrity, and finding joy in every season.”
- “Our family exists to glorify God, serve people, and grow in faith together.”
Your mission doesn’t have to sound impressive—it just needs to be true to your heart.
Reinforce It Regularly – Post It at Home, Pray Over It Together
A mission statement doesn’t work if it’s buried in your junk drawer. Make it visible.
Try this:
- Frame it and hang it in a central spot.
- Say it together as a family during mealtimes or prayer.
- Pray over it weekly, asking God to shape your home around His Word.
When life gets chaotic (and it will), your mission becomes your compass. It reminds you why you’re saying no to some things and yes to others.
Invite Accountability – Ask Friends or Church Family to Pray With You
Parenting with purpose is not a solo act. Surround yourself with people who will encourage you, pray for your family, and lovingly hold you accountable to the mission God has placed on your heart.
This might look like:
- Sharing your mission statement with trusted friends or a small group.
- Asking them to pray specifically for your children’s spiritual growth.
- Joining a parent prayer group for encouragement and support.
You don’t have to do this alone. God has designed His people to walk together.
You’re Building More Than a Family—You’re Building a Legacy
Joshua stood before the people and boldly declared, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” He understood that families don’t stumble into faithfulness by accident. It takes courage and intentionality.
You’re not just raising kids. You’re shaping world-changers. You’re building a legacy that can echo into eternity.
At Fidelis Academy, we see your heart. We see the long days, the late-night prayers, and the quiet sacrifices. And we’re here to remind you: God sees you too. He’s proud of you. He’s with you. And He’s using your faithfulness to grow a harvest in your children’s lives.
